GUIDE FOR THE COLLEGE SEARCH FOR WSA PLAYERS

I. Contact schools with an email of interest including the following:

  1. Introductory Email - Reminder that today most coaches use email and text.  See examples of how to construct your initial "email letter" to the college coach.

  2. Your player resume - We strongly recommend using the College Fit Finder Player Profile.  Howeversee examples of templates provided below -- download and edit w/ your information):

  3. A letter of recommendation or phone call from your club coach, DOC, or high school coach.

    a. These two items are required before any "Official" visits may take place during Senior year & normally before any official scholarship offer can be made.

II. Follow up letters with an email or phone correspondence within 5-7 days to make sure the school has received your letter and profile.

III. Provide/Email Your College Showcase Schedule your schools’ coaches so they can watch you play (See Emailing Coaches above). 

IV. Make sure ODP, club, or HS coach contacts your school’s coach. 

V. Keep a file folder of all the schools you’ve contacted, their responses, the dates contacts were made, etc….

VI. Research the school’s you are interested in – Be Ambitious – Be Realistic!! Be Proactive!!

VI. Set up College Visits at the schools you are most interested in.  Junior year visits are "unofficial" and unlimited.  Senior year 5 "official visits" allowed.

VII. Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) -- Submit after OCT 1st of your senior year to apply for Federal Student Aid.

VII. National Letter of Intent:  Early Signing First Wednesday in NOV. Annually -  Latest Signing – August 1st

  • Signing a national letter of intent means you embark on an agreement with all NLI schools that you are no longer eligible for recruiting from other NLI schools.  It is also accompanied by the school’s financial commitment to you, which is guaranteed for one year (and you get a pic).  

  • National Letter of Intent is operated through the SEC (Southeast Conference).  You can  direct NLI questions to the SEC Office (205) 458 3013 or http://www.nationalletter.org/

  • There are penalties for signing and then choosing another institution.

VI. Eligibility NCAA:  These standards are set by the NCAA and checked by the NCAA Clearinghouse.  GPA, SAT and/or ACT requirements are also a part of eligibility.  You can go to www.ncaa.org to download the requirements. 

  • If you do not meet the requirements a waiver may be filed by an NCAA institution on your behalf and the NCAA academic committee will consider “objectively” your complete academic background. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR NCAA:  NCAA Requirements                         

BEGIN THE CLEARINGHOUSE PROCESS ASAP DURING YOUR SENIOR YEAR!

VII. NCAA Clearinghouse: YOU MUST BE CLEARED BY THE CLEARINGHOUSE!  You can either pick up a Clearinghouse form at your counseling office, or you can register online at  ELIGIBILITY CENTER

VIII. Eligibility NAIA:  A prospective applicant must have at least two of the following:

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA in 13 core courses

  • SAT of 860/ ACT 18

  • Be in the top 50% of graduating class

IX. NAIA Clearinghouse - NAIA Eligiblity Center

IX. Eligibility NCAA D-III: Determined by the institution.  Typically D-III schools have higher standards.  NO ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS!  BUT… ask me about the magical money coaches find…..
