Quartuccio and Kennington Commit to O.R.U.

Tony Quartuccio
Joey Kennington

If playing NCAA Division I soccer is most players' dreams, Tony Quartuccio and Joey Kennington are living proof that dreaming is worthwhile.  The two players have both committed to playing soccer for coach Steve Hayes O.R.U. Golden Eagles this Fall.

Kennington and Quartuccio have both been members of the WSA 85 boys team the past five years.  Both players have been instrumental in the improvement and emergence of the WSA 85 boys team which achieved a national ranking, and a state final appearance in 2003.  Kennington and Quartuccio were both recruited by several NCAA D-2, NCAA D-3, and NAIA schools, as well as a few NCAA D-I programs.  The decision for both to choose O.R.U. may have been to reacquaint with teammate Shawn Hawkins, a.k.a. "Hawk", who played for the Golden Eagles this past year.  But more importantly the decision for both to play at the same school may have been to remain teammates themselves at least for another year.  While waiting for their WSA 85 teammates to return from college this past Spring, the two combined to play forward for the WSA 86 boys team.  And the combination often times resulted in goals.  Both players are known for their wide play, but both also consider themselves attacking forward players, and pride themselves on the hard-nosed tackling, and unrelenting running that is required of a champion.  The WSA club is very proud of these two fine, young men for their achievement, for their model of excellence, and for all of their contributions to the WSA soccer club during their careers.  And we all look forward to following them as they continue to represent our club at the "next level".[06/07/04]

Tommy Apitz Commits to Northern

Tommy Apitz

Tom Apitz of the WSA 86 boys has committed to playing college soccer at Northern Junior College for the Fall of 2004.  In spite of offers from NCAA schools, Apitz has elected to go the junior college route in hopes of refining his game before looking to move on to an NCAA D-I program.  "I think a small school will be better for me at first", reports Apitz.  Apitz was the leading goal scorer for the WSA 86 boys squad this past Spring as the center defender or "stopper".  Apitz tallied several brilliant goals during the season, including the smashing bomb in the Josh Zingo Memorial game that many WSA fans saw, and a bomb against Royals 85 in this year's State Cup that put the 86's in front of the defending National Semifinalist for most of the first half.  Tom will likely take on an attacking role for Northern which has revamped it's line-up for the Fall 2004 season.  Apitz transferred to WSA from the St. Louis area this past year. [06/07/04]

WSA 87 Girls Blue Finish 3rd in Statewide and Subregional League

The WSA 87 girls blue team, coached by Scott Peavler, finished in 3rd place in the league standings for the u17 girls Oklahoma Premiere League and the u17 girls Sub-regional League this past year.  Both leagues opened play in September and concluded in the Spring.  NOKC United were champions in both leagues.  The Oklahoma Premiere League included the top ranked teams in Oklahoma, while the Sub-regional League included the best u17 teams from a three-state area, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.  The WSA 87 girls squad also spent most of the year nationally ranked, and played several of the nation's top ranked opponents during the year in college showcase events.  One such notable performance was against the top ranked Sting Club (national champions), in which WSA gave away a goal in the final minutes to lose 1-0.  Well done ladies on an outstanding season![06/06/04]

WSA 88 Boys and WSA 90 Boys Capture 3rd Place in u14 and u16 "A" Divisions...

The WSA 88 boys and the WSA 90 boys teams, both coached by Josh McElroy, captured 3rd place trophies in their respective GCSA competitive leagues.  Both squads competed in the "A" Division league for their age group.  While both teams had aspirations of a championship or runner-up trophy, the third place trophy was well deserved by both squads.  The 88 boys had a break-out season this past Spring as they forced last year's league champions, Kicksmart 88, to come from behind to tie them in league play.  They forced last year's Oklahoma State Runners-Up, Titans 88, to find a goal in the final two minutes to win 2-1 in the State Director's Cup, and they narrowly missed a trophy at the Friendship Cup.  The 90 boys made amends for a disappointing Fall season by turning things around this Spring.  The team couldn't quite find the good fortune needed to get out of their pool play in tournaments, but the 3rd place league trophy is a good reward for these young boy's consistent hard work.  Well done to both teams!

Tony Quartuccio and Shelly Roblyer receive Blake Bingman Scholarship

Tony Quartuccio of WSA 85 boys, and Shelly Roblyer of the WSA 86 girls, both were announced winners of the Blake Bingman Soccer Scholarship for their dedication to the sport, achievement in soccer, and for being good role models.  Congratulations to Tony and Shelly for this accomplishment, and for representing WSA with the class, character, and dignity that makes each of us proud. [06/01/04]

Two WSA teams tie for u16 A League Runner-Up; WSA 89 and WSA 88

The WSA 89 girls and the WSA 88 girls recently learned that they tied for league runner-up in the GCSA "A" Division, a league which included 13 of Tulsa's best teams.  Both teams finished with an identical 20 points in league play.  The two teams will add the league runner-up trophy to tournament runner-up trophies they recently collected.  The WSA 88 girls finished as runner-up in the Thunder Friendship Cup Gold Division, losing in a shootout, and the WSA 89 girls finished as runners-up in the WSA Friendship Cup u16 division, missing the championship trophy based on a goal difference tiebreaker.  Well done ladies on great seasons!

WSA 93 Girls Take League Runner-Up Trophy

The WSA 93 girls wrapped up the u12 girls division with 5 shutouts and only one loss, which was enough to give the girls the league runner-up trophy.  The WSA 93 girls had a great season which included a couple of near misses at tournaments.  The team lead their OSA State Cup "play-in" game over tornado by a score of 1-0 at halftime before giving away two goals in the second half.  But the league runner-up trophy was well-deserved.  We are all proud of our young ladies team!

WSA 88 Boys; WSA 90 Boys Contend for League Trophies

The WSA 88 and WSA 90 boys teams are both waiting for their league fixtures to be completed so they can find out their final placing.  Both teams spent the season teetering between 2nd and 3rd in the fixtures.  The WSA 88 boys tied last year's league champions Kicksmart 88 to propel themselves into contention, while WSA 90 beat Blitz 90, the league favorites, to propel themselves into contention.  Both teams have compiled enough points in their "A" division leagues to finish as runner-up or third place.   [06/01/04]

Mexico vs WSA Match Canceled Due to Weather

The highly anticipated match between our very own WSA 86 and WSA 87 girls and the Mexican international u18 women's side was canceled due to some severe Oklahoma weather on Wednesday, April 21st.  The Mexican team at least learned what a "tornado" was, but no soccer (futbol) was played.  The match is postponed indefinitely since the Mexican team must continue their tour of the U.S.

ERIC CHUPP, WSA 85 Boys, Commits to Northern

Eric Chupp, a member of the nationally ranked, 2003 State Runner-Up, WSA 85 boys team, has committed to playing college soccer at Northern Oklahoma Community College for the Fall 2004 season.  Chupp has been team captain and member of the WSA 85 boys side for the past four years.  Chupp tore his ACL in his knee, and after a reconstructive knee surgery two years ago returned for his senior year, but decided an extra year of training before college soccer would be best.  Chupp has spent the past year at OSU and TCC.  He is a center midfielder for the 85 boys, coached by Roger Bush.

CONGRATULATIONS to the WSA 92 girls and the WSA 88 girls who both captured runner-up trophies in their age groups this past weekend in the Tulsa Thunder Friendship Cup.  Both teams had outstanding weekends and the trophies were well-deserved.  The 92's and 88's were two of only only three teams representing WSA in this year's Thunder Cup and they certainly did a fine job.  The WSA 92 girls are coached by Craig Anderson and the WSA 88 girls are coached by John Richer. [04/19/04]

WSA 90 Boys Friendship Cup Champions, WSA 89 Girls Runners-Up

The WSA 90 boys captured the WSA Friendship Cup Championship trophy two weeks ago by defeating Blitz 1-0 in the finals.  WSA had to go to penalties in the semifinal stage to squeak past Fort Smith, Arkansas.  The trophy is one of many the team has captured, but it represents their first championship trophy.  The same weekend the WSA 89 girls captured the runner-up trophy for the WSA Friendship Cup.  The girls were edged by points in an odd set of circumstances in which they defeated the tournament champions by a scoreline of 6-0, went undefeated, but lost on points.  CONGRATULATIONS to both teams for their performances.  WSA 90 boys are coached by Josh MacElroy, and WSA 89 girls are coached by Jamie Johnson and Roger Bush. [04/19/04]

WSA 87 Girls Blue Take Sting to Wire
The WSA 87 girls "blue" squad has played several of the nation's top ranked teams this year.  Last weekend the squad traveled to Dallas where they were within minutes of drawing the nationally acclaimed Sting Club.  The girls dropped the match 1-0 on a goal given way in the final moments.  The team also had very competitive matches against some of the nation's best teams in that showcase, and currently sit at 3rd place in the Oklahoma Premiere League Standings.  WSA 87 "blue" is coached by Scott Peavler.[04/19/04]
