Kennington Gets Winner For Oral Roberts University Against Belmont
Joey Kennington (WSA 85) has had an auspicious beginning to his collegiate career at Oral Roberts University.  In his first ever collegiate game Kennington was asked to defend two of the nation’s top forwards in Todd Goddard and Kyle Brown, when ORU met T.U. on September 1st.  Kennington played near flawless in helping ORU defeat the nationally ranked T.U. Golden Hurricane 3-1.  It marked only the second time in 25 years that ORU had defeated TU in men’s soccer.  Then two days later Kennington, again playing marking back, helped ORU defend for 120 minutes of soccer against Belmont University.  The match went through two Golden Goal periods, and in the dying moments, Kennington made an 85 yard, “coast to coast”, run after ORU won a defensive corner and counter-attacked.  The workmanlike attitude paid off because with 2.2 seconds remaining a deflected shot landed at Kennington’s feet and he put home the winner for the Golden Eagles, a goal which propelled the team to their first national ranking.  Also contributing valuable minutes for ORU in both games was WSA teammate Tony Quartuccio.  ORU currently stands at 2 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie on the season with Mid-Con play around the corner.  [09/16/05]

89 Girls Champions of BASC Labor Day Tournament

The 89 girls continued their winning ways of last year by claiming the Broken Arrow Soccer Club Labor Day Championship on Monday, September 5th.  The girls defeated a tough Conway United 88 girls team in the final by a score of 1-0.  After giving up no shots on goal in the final behind an organized defense, the team capped what many coaches would consider an ideal weekend by going undefeated and  unscored on the entire tournament.
The 89 girls opened the tournament beating J.B. Marine 88 out of St. Louis 4-0 on Saturday morning.  In spite of the score, J.B. Marine proved to be a worthy opponent, and WSA's opportunistic attitude took advantage of the chances they created.  WSA then defeated Greenbrier Arsenal 4-0, once again limiting their opponent to few chances, while creating several of their own that they didn't quite finish. In their final first round match WSA defeated Conway United 89 by a score of 2-0, which secured their both in the final as the bracket winner.  Facing Conway's older team the next day was a challenge as Conway United 88 had ripped through their bracket defeating TSC 89, J.B. Marine 89, and Bartlesville 88 along the way.
The championship trophy marks the team's third championship trophy since April, and improved on last year's Labor Day tournament finish, when the team was beaten in the finals. The 89 girls are coached by Roger Bush and Jamie Johnson.
Congratulations 89 girls on a superb weekend!  [09/07/05]
