THE CONCUSSION PROGRAM

A WHOLISTIC PROGRAM - Since 2009 (First Oklahoma Soccer Club to implement)

EDUCATION:  WSA has hired on retainer, Holly Thompson, PT, Vestibular and Balance Specialist, since 2009 to oversee the WSA Concussion program.  Holly meets periodically with the WSA Coaching Staff providing educational material and updates.  All coaches are required to participate in one Concussion Education Class per year.

Holly also meets with teams and players to review and expand the knowledge base of the seriousness of concussions, new research on prevention methods, symptoms and signs of concussion, return to play protocols, and gender and developmental age differences that impact concussion prevention methods.

AWARENESS: In partnering with LifeMotion, WSA has enabled Holly to lead an awareness campaign in Oklahoma's largest soccer club.  The campaign includes videos (via social media outlets), paper literature, and e-news blasts at events and during league play.  This awareness has been key to reversing age-old trends and countering the "I got my bell rung" culture, to take brain injuries more serious in terms of mitigating risk and treatment when an injury does ocurr.

BASELINE TESTING:  Every WSA athlete 11U and up will be baseline tested each year.  The results are retained in a database collected by Holly.  SWAY Medical has provided the testing procedure since 2015 for WSA.  The SWAY App is used to generate basline scores for WSA athletes, and the information is contained in a private and confidential profile for each athlete that is accessible to LifeMotion.  This data can be accessed in the case of a suspected concussion.  Holly is also "on call" at all times for all WSA team leaders should there be a suspected concussion (home or away events).  The data can be accessed if needed to test against the baseline to help assess the athlete.  On ocassion some of the benchline data can be used to indicate other deficient areas which can catalyze an individualized training program (i.e. if balance score is below a certain standard without possiblity of concussion symptoms there might be a stenghtening protocol that can be applied to the athlete).

ON CALL MEDICAL:  Holly Thompson resides as WSA's "on call" medical expert.  Holly is a physcial therapist and is able to refer based on symptoms.  Team leaders have access to Holly's number and are encourage to call when and if needed.

ON SITE DIAGNOSIS AT EVENTS:  LifeMotion will be on site at several WSA events providing additional layers of medical staff for any head injury assessments needed.

INJURY ASSESSMENT CLINICS AT WSA TRAINING GROUNDS:  Multiple times per month "in season" LifeMotion will be present at WSA Training Grounds for FREE INJURY ASSESSMENTS to any WSA member.  These are a part of member privileges and benefits of WSA Soccer and the partnership with LifeMotion.
